Next week’s school target; Walk quietly through the school.
Please be aware that the date for key stage 2 Carols in church has been changed from Thursday 17th Dec to Monday 14th Dec, it will still be at 9.30am. Parents are more than welcome to join us.
It is really important that children attend school every day if they are to make continuous progress in their learning. In line with DFE regulations, we only authorise absences in very exceptional circumstances. As we approach the winter period when illnesses may once again increase, we want to encourage all parents to ensure their children attend school whenever they are able. We do insist that any sickness is followed by a 48 hour absence, but otherwise if children are well enough we do expect them to be in school. If your child is going to be absent due to illness please inform the office before 9am to assist us in completing the registers.
We know that regular reading at home is vital if children are to embed this essential life skill. You will have seen guidance that we circulated in the last couple of weeks about how you can help your child at home. From next week we are starting a new initiative to encourage reading – the Reading Raffle! Any child who has read throughout the week and whose planner has been signed by their parent as doing so in the way expected in their class will be entered into a raffle to win prizes the following week. To avoid doubt, it must be a parent’s signature – not the child – and must be agreed with the class teacher. Children who have not had sufficient opportunities to read during the week will be offered the chance to do some extra reading on Friday afternoon.
We would like to thank everyone who supported the South Milford Bonfire last week. It was an amazing event, attended by over 5000 people! Our school obtained more sponsorship than in previous years, and we had a large army of volunteers to help run the event. Our contribution is directly linked to the amount of funding we receive, and we hope to get a sizeable contribution to the PTA to help fund new Smartboards in our classrooms.
Don’t forget to encourage your child to play the games in Sumdog and Skoolbo at home. All pupils in Years 1 – 6 have login details for these sites, and the games are proven to really enhance their learning in the basic skills. A new Sumdog contest opens on 27th November when our classes will be competing against classes in other North Yorkshire schools, so get practicing now to make sure we are ready to do well!
You can now apply for our School Direct teacher training placements through the UCAS website (see our website for more details). We have already received a number of applications and are delighted to announce that placements are filling fast. If you are interested in this route into teaching and would like to discuss it further please contact Mr Weights.
On Tuesday 8th December we are having our school Christmas dinner, the menu for the week will be sent out very soon. We are also supporting Text Santa by wearing Christmas Jumpers and or Christmas bobble hats! Pupils and staff can choose to wear either a festive jumper or bobble hat or both for a £1 donation. Text Santa is splitting the proceeds between Macmillan Cancer Support, Make-A-Wish Uk and Save the Children.
