Congratulations to a pupil in our Year 5 class who won the Governor Award this term. Governors make the award to a pupil who has visibly enacted the school’s aims and ethos. The Chair of Governors, Mr Sheppard joined the Leavers Assembly on Friday to present the award.

Y5 MFL Day at Sherburn High School

Y5 had a great day at Sherburn High School, where they met with many other Y5 children from the alliance to take part in a range of French activities, led by some of the students at SHS. Children learnt various skills such as how to talk about their hobbies and order food in a French café. They even got to sample croissants and pain au chocolat! The children represented Monk Fryston brilliantly – well done to all of them!

Yr 5 Ancient Greek Theatre Masks

Year 5 have worked over a number of afternoons to create Ancient Greek theatre masks. Children researched and designed a mask. They then used modroc and balloons to create the shape then a mixture of paint and materials to give their mask character as the Ancient Greeks would have done. The masks look fantastic!

Y5 Budding Scientists

A group of budding scientists from Year 5 had a fantastic day at Tadcaster Riverside school, joining children from other schools in the STAR Alliance to explore space! To start the day, they made a scale model of the solar system, using plasticine to make each of the planets, and then positioned each of the planets the right distance away from the Sun (Neptune was nearly one hundred metres away from it!) Next, they started to research the planet Mars, using the National Schools’ Observatory website, after which they became astrobiologists for the afternoon; their mission was to find the most Martian-like soil from three samples, using different scientific techniques. Our children made us very proud with their enthusiasm and very impressive scientific knowledge of our solar system!

Rugby Stars

Rucking Rugby Stars!

What an afternoon the year 6 Rugby Team had, finishing a creditable fourth in the Selby District Rugby Tournament held at Selby RUFC. This was only after losing a very close third place playoff final. It was a really fantastic achievement, from a very enthusiastic and determined team. Especially, considering they had only played Rugby in P.E. twice and never before as a team, until their actual first game!
A tremendous effort!

Hi 5 Netball 20.10.16

Eight year 5 and 6 pupils went to Sherburn High School for a cluster Hi- 5 tournament ( a simpler form of netball with just 5 players on court at a time). Despite coming 6th we showed outstanding knowledge of the rules and regulations and tactical play. I’m very proud of them all. Well done.

Y5 Football Festival 29.9.16

Heads held high

A newly assembled team of year 5 boys’ footballers put in a very competitive performance in a recent 6 a side tournament against other year 5 and 6 teams. Winning their first game 3-1 they then remained unbeaten until meeting the eventual tournament winner (South Milford) in their final game. The team played great football and showed excellent team work & sportsmanship throughout, eventually finishing a very creditable 3rd.

Y5 Planetarium

Wow space is massive!

Year 5, as part of their exploration of space, had a visit through the Solar System this morning and all from the comfort of the school Hall! The children had a fabulous time learning about the eight planets and numerous asteroids that make up the Solar System. The class particularly enjoyed learning about the Cassini probe, which is exploring Saturn and its own system of moons. They came away full of wonder for our space project.
